Dalkeith Digest: Friday 23 May 2025
Town centre regeneration plans, Mining Museum fundraising appeal and Midlothian volunteer awards
Here comes the rain again - it looks like this weekend will bring a break from the wall to wall sunshine we’ve become accustomed to, but I’ve seen enough in the news and social media to suggest that this will come as a relief to some. And if the weather gets you down, lighten your mood with the thought of the hundreds of mice kind locals have knitted for the wee ones starting P1 later in the year 🐁
Enjoy, and thanks for reading.
Local news and developments
👷♂️ Updated regeneration plans: A business plan for the regeneration of Dalkeith town centre will now be developed after updated plans went before Midlothian Council. The plans include moving Dalkeith Library and Arts Centre into the Council HQ to allow for the expanded redevelopment, which would include up to 74 flats and around 500sqm of retail space.
🏭 Mining Museum fundraising appeal: National Mining Museum Scotland is aiming to raise 450k to fund a transformation project to secure the museum’s future and “re-establish it as a world-class destination in Midlothian”. To help the museum, which is celebrating 130 years of the Lady Victoria Colliery, you can make a donation or pick up a Passport for £20 to enjoy unlimited access for a year.
🛣️ 20mph objections considered: Objections to a 20mph speed limit across towns in Midlothian were considered by councillors and largely dismissed, according to Midlothian View. Council Leader Kelly Parry clarified that the policy had already been agreed unanimously, adding “we are simply hear to consider the objections which we have now considered and we can move on”.
⚠️ Missing person appeal: Police Scotland is appealing for help to trace vulnerable missing man Alan McMillan. Alan, from Penicuik, was last seen around 8pm on 21 May in the Bog Road area and may have travelled to Edinburgh and boarded a train to Glenrothes shortly thereafter. He is described as 6ft 4in tall, slim, with short grey hair, and was last seen wearing blue jeans, a red and blue checked shirt, black Trespass top, black gilet and brown shoes.

✍️ Politician writes: Midlothian North & Musselburgh MSP Colin Beattie has used his column in Midlothian View to highlight the Scottish Government’s new Programme for Government. The Programme is normally published in September but was brought forward by the First Minister to ensure it covers a year up to the Holyrood elections in May 2026.
📖 Bookbug nomination: Midlothian Council Library Service has announced that Lesley from Penicuik Library was shortlisted in the Bookbug Hero Awards 2025, run by the Scottish Book Trust. Lesley was commended for the work she did around Quiet Bookbug Sessions and her gentle and soft approach with the children.
🐭 Cute mice update: Last week the Council Library Service confirmed over 230 mice had been donated as part of the annual Mid Mouse project to support children in their transition to primary school. Be quick if you have any more to hand in, the deadline is today (23 May)!

Appreciate the roundups. I hadn’t heard about the Mining Museum passport, that’s a great idea. I'm wondering if there’s been talk of doing something similar for other local spots
